Books by Jeff Sellers

Stories rooted in the places we know.

I was born and raised in Muskogee. My new book follows the people and places that shaped the other half of Oklahoma, and the state that almost existed there.

The story behind the book

Oklahoma was supposed to be two states. The other one had a name.

In 1905, people in Indian Territory proposed the State of Sequoyah. That almost-state opens a wider story of eastern Oklahoma: its towns, courts, oil fields, and the people who lived through the changes.

The State That Almost Was is a narrative history of that country by someone who grew up in it. Every chapter is connected to a place you can still stand in.
